Uzbekistan is a Central Asian nation and former Soviet republic. It's known for its mosques, mausoleums and other sites linked to the Silk Road, the ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean.

Uzbekistan’s Aral Sea pollution has been called “one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters” causing serious health problems. The once prosperous fishing industry has been essentially destroyed, bringing unemployment and economic hardship. Human rights organizations have accused the government of child labor violations and unlawful termination of human life. Thousands of young children are sent by their government to work in cotton fields under appalling conditions, and schools are closed down by government officials during the harvest. Civil unrest is ongoing, and a large number of orphans and street kids face the equal danger of violence from or against the government. Christians suffer severe persecution and are subjected to heavy fines and jail time. Our Young Life staff operates in a dangerous, underground secrecy as Christians on a mission to reach the next kid with the Gospel and provide emotional support and care to the children in Uzbekistan.
